Auburn researchers target virus threatening Alabama’s tomato industry

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) – A virus spread by nearly invisible insects has triggered outbreaks in Alabama’s tomato industry since 2020, and Auburn University researchers are now leading a multi-state effort to help growers respond.

Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus is transmitted by thrips — insects too small to see with the naked eye — which pick up the virus and carry it from plant to plant.
