Advocates worry Ohio moratorium erodes gains in home care employment

COLUMBUS — The DeWine administration’s policy blocking the Medicaid enrollment of new home care providers could derail the employment growth seen by the industry in recent years, according to advocates with the Ability Center of Greater Toledo.

As part of his effort to address fraud in the Medicaid system, Gov. Mike DeWine implemented a six-month moratorium on the enrollment of new home health-care and hospice providers. The policy was announced in May.

“I understand wanting to maybe slow the system down — fraud, waste, and abuse is a serious concern,” said Jules Patalita, a disability rights advocate with the Ability Center. “But there are many people out there that do not have enough care providers that are able to give them all the hours or all the care they need.”…
