SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — After several citations were issued earlier this month at a particular crosswalk on N. Glenstone earlier this month, officers will be back at that location next week to continue their enforcement operation.
Officers will be back at the High Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) signal on North Glenstone Avenue, just north of Kearney Street next week. This particular round of enforcement in the area will begin July 13.
Previously, police had a presence at the signal the first week of July, and that operation resulted in nine citations for pedestrians, and one for a driver given a red-light violation. The goal is to focus on safety for pedestrians crossing streets where they are supposed to, and making sure drivers are stopping where they should. During the previous operation, SPD notes 22 pedestrians safely used the signal.
This is part of the SGF Yields pedestrian safety campaign, which started in 2017. Springfield Police and Public Works have partnered up for the program, aiming to eliminate traffic fatalities by 2040 and disabling injury crashes by 2050.
