SALEM — PETA has asked the Salem County Sheriff’s Office to end its K-9 program following the deaths of two members.

Rip and Boomer died on May 29 in their handler’s vehicle, where they were left with the windows rolled up and a faulty air conditioner. Following an investigation by the Salem County Prosecutor’s Office, Sgt. Cody Henderson faces animal cruelty charges.

In a letter from Allison Fandl, PETA’s manager of special projects in their cruelty investigations department, the group asked Sheriff Charles Miller to consider ending its K-9 program as the current roster retires. Their main reason is not the hours but the lack of technology to guarantee that a dog will not be left unattended in a vehicle…
