Wichita police defend 12-hour presence outside home that turned out to be empty

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan on Friday responded to public criticism of the department’s handling of what it thought was a standoff with a shooting suspect.

After 12 hours, police discovered that the suspect was not there.

“Although the suspect was not found inside the residence, that outcome does not mean the response was unnecessary,” Sullivan said in a statement posted to social media. “Officers must make decisions based on the facts, witness statements and known threats available at the time.”
