What began as an evening of celebration with her children has become a life-altering ordeal for Massachusetts single mother Ninamarie Mendes, who was shot three times while trying to protect her family during a street celebration in Brockton.
According to fundraising campaigns organized by friends and coworkers, Mendes had attended a Cabo Verde World Cup watch party with her two children before joining an impromptu neighborhood celebration. As people danced and celebrated in the street, gunfire suddenly erupted.
In the chaos, Mendes moved to shield her children and was struck by three bullets.
