CHICAGO (WGN) — Members of Chicago’s South Side community are upset after workers started to tear down a Bronzeville landmark late last week.
The landmark — a large mural of historic Black musician and entertainer Nat King Cole on the side of a building near 43rd Street and King Drive — was partially taken down after the building’s new owners started renovating the property to address safety concerns.
Last October, Ryan Wilkins and his wife, Lisa Collins, bought the vacant building with plans to fix it up. Shortly after buying the property, “The architect and I did a full evaluation of the building, and we noticed that some of the bricks were basically coming off the building,” Wilkins said…
