Federal Funding Cuts To Permanent Housing For Homeless Could Leave More Chicagoans On The Streets

CHICAGO — When Mildred Jenkins finally found a home at Deborah’s Place, it was one of the best things that ever happened to her.

After living in the organization’s shelter for a year, she got her own apartment through the nonprofit’s Permanent Supportive Housing program, which subsidizes long-term housing for people experiencing homelessness. Living in the Deborah’s Place apartment building meant easy access to food, an employment specialist and health offerings through the program’s wraparound services.

“I didn’t have anything, and they fully furnish apartments for you,” Jenkins said. “They give you a bed, a dining table, dishware — things that you need — and I thought that was the greatest thing. It offers so much more than you expect.”…
