SCDOT seeks public input on safety improvements for Remount Road after hundreds of crashes

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — A busy stretch of Remount Road in North Charleston could see major safety improvements as the South Carolina Department of Transportation asks the public to weigh in on a plan aimed at reducing crashes along the corridor.

SCDOT is conducting a Road Safety Assessment of the 1.8-mile stretch of Remount Road between Rivers Avenue and North Rhett Avenue. The corridor was selected through the Federal Highway Safety Improvement Program after officials identified high crash rates and speed patterns as ongoing concerns.

According to SCDOT, 509 crashes were reported along the corridor between 2021 and 2023—an average of about 170 crashes each year. Of those, 145 resulted in injuries and five were fatal. Three of the fatalities involved pedestrians…
