Developer proposes gas station, grocery near cemetery | Exclusive

Residents are urging Bryan County leaders to reject a rezoning request for a proposed commercial development near Burnt Church Cemetery, saying increased traffic, noise and future development could endanger one of Richmond Hill’s most historic sites.

Cape Group LLC is seeking to rezone 38 acres at Belfast River Road and Highway 144, including 22 acres planned for commercial development. Members of Richmond Hill Presbyterian Church, which traces its connection to the cemetery and a church that stood beside it before burning in 1882, are asking county commissioners to deny the request when it comes before them Aug. 11.
