Community block parties aim to address violence in Albany

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — As we continue to monitor instances of violence in the Capital City, a community based group called We Are Revolutionary is rewriting the narrative, one block party at a time. Tuesday they held their second of eight community block parties on the corner of Madison Avenue and Grand Street.

“We’ll do everything we need to do to make sure that our people are good,” said Thaddeus Killean, the interim executive director of the program. “When I say our people, I mean everyone, anybody that’s in a high risk area, anybody that’s in a highly traumatized area because that’s what it is.”

Killean says that they are planning block parties in eight of what’s known as Albany’s most high risk areas. Their hope is to show that they are stronger in numbers. However, beyond that, they are working to address what they see as a root cause of the violence.

“Adverse childhood experiences are toxic stress that messes with your fight or flight,” explained Killean. “So that’s basically what has happened. And if we can get training into these communities to teach them how to deal with the fight or flight and prevent as opposed to reacting, that will stop a lot of things that’s going on.”…
