LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — We’ve had some serious heat over Mid-Michigan the last couple of days, and we’ll likely see that heat continue for a few more.
However, latest trends suggest we may also see some significant Canadian wildfire smoke as soon as Wednesday for some, with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy issuing a statewide air quality alert that goes into effect at midnight Tuesday.
Latest satellite imagery shows that most of the smoke is confined in Ontario, Canada. A northerly wind will drag down that smoke into Michigan by Wednesday.
This is one of the models on where the worst of the wildfire smoke will be by noon on Wednesday. It’ll be dense for those in the upper peninsula and northern lower Michigan. Most of the day should be fine for Lansing to the south, but the north wind will continue to push the smoke south going into Thursday.
By Thursday, the entire state will likely be affected by the smoke. Combined with the heat, this will make the air quality very poor. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to stay indoors for the next few days to prevent any air quality related illnesses and keep track of the air quality in your area.
According to the state, children, teenagers and seniors are at greater risk of smoke-induced health effects, as are those who are pregnant, work outside, or have heart or lung-related diseases.
