Kentucky moving forward with upgrades to I-71 rest areas in Oldham County

OLDHAM COUNTY, Ky. (WAVE) – Work is moving forward to upgrade the temporarily closed Interstate 71 rest areas in Oldham County, with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet planning a phased project to fix utilities, add more truck parking and improve the facilities for travelers.

State officials said Kentucky recently received a federal grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to help pay for expanded truck parking at the northbound and southbound rest areas. The funding is expected to support KYTC’s broader push to modernize rest stops along the interstate.

KYTC said the first phase is expected to be put out to bid and awarded this fall. That work focuses on the northbound rest area, including installing new water and sewer lines. If everything stays on schedule, the northbound rest area could reopen in early 2027…
