State aging officials promote tools to keep seniors safe

Pennsylvania Department of Aging Secretary Jason Kavulich kicked off a statewide tour on Monday, July 13, at the Delaware County Office of Services for the Aging (COSA) in Eddystone, designed to keep seniors safer.

Kavulich discussed the department’s new approach to keeping older Pennsylvanians safe, which includes the replacement of the outdated pass/fail scoring system for local senior agencies.

Known as the Comprehensive Aging Performance Evaluation (CAPE), the new system aims to improve elder abuse investigations and oversight of adult protective services. CAPE, which he said provides historic levels of transparency, includes a metric system designed to ensure that local area agencies such as COSA have the support, oversight, and resources they need to keep older citizens safe. “Older adults in Pennsylvania deserve a modernized system that helps them stay safe and supported, healthy and thriving, but our infrastructure had not kept pace with the growing needs of older adults,” Kavulich said. “Our administration took this challenge head on and is making overdue system improvements.”…
