Utah Mall Stabbing Sparks Alarm Over Rising Anti-Muslim Attacks

Additional Coverage:

A Utah man has been arrested after allegedly stabbing a Muslim mall employee multiple times in a targeted attack motivated by religious hatred, according to court documents.

Peter Michael Larsen, 48, was taken into custody on July 13 at Salt Lake County Jail on charges of attempted murder and prohibited dangerous weapon conduct. The incident occurred at the Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City, a suburb of Salt Lake City.

West Valley City Police reported that the assault happened just before 3 p.m., when Larsen approached the victim, who was working at a mall kiosk. After a brief exchange, Larsen reportedly pulled out a knife and stabbed the man repeatedly. Bystanders intervened, restraining Larsen until officers arrived on the scene.

The victim, whose name has been identified by friends as Syed Sohail Uddin, suffered multiple stab wounds and was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. According to an affidavit, Larsen admitted to investigators that he specifically targeted Uddin because of his Muslim faith, stating he intended to kill him. Larsen also claimed to see himself as a “catalyst” aiming to kill Muslims.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the case, including any potential connection between Larsen and the victim.

Imam Shuaib Din of the Utah Islamic Center, who has been in contact with Uddin’s family, described how Larsen asked the victim’s name and religion before requesting a bottle of water. As Uddin turned away to get the water, Larsen began the stabbing attack.

Police responded to multiple 911 calls reporting the altercation, finding Larsen subdued by bystanders who had disarmed him. Larsen was also taken to the hospital after being struck in the head during the struggle.

Officials have deemed Larsen a substantial threat to public safety, citing his violent conduct and extremist views, including plans for mass casualty events.

The attack has drawn condemnation from Muslim advocacy groups such as the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). CAIR’s National Executive Director Nihad Awad emphasized that anti-Muslim rhetoric fuels real-world violence, underscoring the dangers of ongoing Islamophobia.

Islamophobic incidents in the U.S. have increased notably over the past two decades, with spikes linked to events such as the 9/11 attacks, immigration debates, and recent conflicts in the Middle East. CAIR reported a record number of discrimination complaints in 2024, continuing a troubling upward trend.

This incident in Utah adds to a series of violent attacks targeting Muslim individuals and communities nationwide in recent years, highlighting the urgent need for vigilance against hate crimes and religious discrimination.
