8 sentenced after travel insurance fraud scheme led to $1.2 million in losses

INDIANAPOLIS — Eight individuals were recently sentenced in Indiana federal court in relation to a $1.2 million travel insurance fraud kickback scheme.

According to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Indiana, each individual, including residents of Indianapolis, Camby and Martinsville, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud.

The following individuals were sentenced in relation to the scheme:

  • Jennifer Fleener
    • 60-year-old Indianapolis resident
      • Sentenced to 57 months in federal prison and two years of supervised release
      • Ordered to pay $1,199,149.32 in restitution
  • Mike Fleener
    • 54-year-old Camby resident
      • Sentenced to 48 months in federal prison and two years of supervised release
      • Ordered to pay $1,188,470.58 in restitution
  • Asha Mimms
    • 46-year-old Indianapolis resident
      • Sentenced to 12 months and one day in federal prison, as well as two years of supervised release
      • Ordered to pay $365,570.85 in restitution
  • Jasmin Aldava Grimes
    • 44-year-old Martinsville resident
      • Sentenced to three years of probation
      • Ordered to pay $788,321.14 in restitution
  • Jennifer Thompson
    • 45-year-old Indianapolis resident
      • Sentenced to three years of probation
      • Ordered to pay $604,745.12 in restitution
  • Amber McDaniel
    • 45-year-old Indianapolis resident
      • Sentenced to two years of probation
      • Ordered to pay $85,894.94 in restitution
  • Christopher Perdue
    • 38-year-old Indianapolis resident
      • Sentenced to three years of probation
      • Ordered to pay $89,403.49 in restitution
  • Dasha Pearson
    • 28-year-old Indianapolis resident
      • Sentenced to two years of probation
      • Ordered to pay $42,628.32 in restitution

The release said that in 2016, Jennifer Fleener began to submit and approve fraudulent travel insurance claims through her employer. Jennifer Fleener’s employer, headquartered in Houston with a travel division in Indianapolis, sells short-term travel medical insurance to those traveling outside the United States.

Jennifer Fleener worked at the business from 2012 to 2021 as a case management supervisor and claims handler. The release said that in 2016, Mike Fleener began to recruit individuals to join in the scheme, including Grimes.

The release said Grimes purchased travel insurance policies from the company using her own information and the information of others “despite having no intention of traveling as stated on the applications.” When the company paid out the claims, Grimes shared a portion of the proceeds with the Fleeners, and later recruited others…
