North Charleston leaders unveil plan to combat youth violence after July 4 block party

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — North Charleston community leaders are responding after a 4th of July block party in the Chicora-Cherokee neighborhood that led to assaults on police officers and multiple arrests.

They unveiled what they call a comprehensive plan to help combat youth violence in the area. The plan is to connect young people with mentors, train them in different jobs, and provide food and basic resources to create change in the community.

“This is about uplifting and empowering our community and getting at the root cause,” said Louis Smith, the executive director at the Community Resource Center. “It’s not saying who is at fault, but it’s saying, let’s make positive things happen in our community, and this is what we’re all about.”…
