Hometown Entertainment: Weekend events in the Roanoke Valley and beyond

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – From live music and a pirate-themed party to a Broadway-style musical and a free jazz festival, there are several events happening across the region this weekend.

First Fridays in Downtown Roanoke

First Fridays returns Friday evening on Franklin Road in Downtown Roanoke, with alternative party rock band The Delaneys headlining. Gates open at 5 p.m., and the event runs until 9 p.m. Admission is $10, with proceeds benefiting local charities.

‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ at Mill Mountain Theatre

Mill Mountain Theatre in Downtown Roanoke is presenting the musical “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” running now through Aug. 2. Tickets start at $26.50.

Pirate’s Ball at Smith Mountain Lake

The Pirate’s Ball is set for Friday night at Mango’s Bar & Grill at Bridgewater Plaza at Smith Mountain Lake, starting at 7 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to wear pirate costumes. The event includes live music, a costume contest, a 50/50 raffle and giveaways.

Cars & Coffee Lynchburg: Christmas in July

Cars & Coffee Lynchburg hosts its Christmas in July event Saturday from 8 to 10 a.m. at Tree of Life Ministries in Lynchburg. Complimentary coffee and donuts will be available. Attendees are asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy for Toys for Tots.

Jazz in July in Salem

Salem’s 25th annual Jazz in July takes place Saturday at the Longwood Park Amphitheater, starting at 3 p.m. The lineup includes The Sway Katz, Flat Five Jazz and more. Admission is free. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets. Food and drinks will be available for purchase.

Summer Arts Festival in Blacksburg

The Summer Arts Festival in Blacksburg features events Friday through Sunday. On Friday, funk, blues, soul and jazz band Root Down performs on Henderson Lawn starting at 6 p.m. Admission is free.
