LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) — While cases of a parasite that causes “explosive” diarrhea normally rise in the spring and summer months, Kentucky is one of many states experiencing a larger-than-typical increase.
As of July 15, the Kentucky Department for Public Health confirmed 108 cases of Cyclosporiasis in Kentucky, nine of which are in Fayette County. Officials said the state typically sees only 35 cases per year.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is still working to identify the cause of the spike, but health officials said it’s often linked to eating or drinking contaminated food or water, specifically in fresh produce.
