(NEXSTAR) – When smoke from wildfires turns the outside air unhealthy, is it safe to run the air conditioner?

On Friday, residents from the Midwest to the East Coast took measures to protect their lungs for yet another day as Canadian wildfire smoke continued to blanket a large swath of the U.S.

Environmental Protection Agency officials urge people to protect themselves by considering a portable air cleaner or high-efficiency HVAC filter, using N95 respirator masks to limit smoke inhalation and adjusting their HVAC system or air conditioner.
