New information continues to emerge about the disturbing situation uncovered in Hamden, Ohio, where 16 children were recently rescued from a severely neglected home.
On June 30, local authorities removed the children, ranging in age from 18 months to 18 years, from a dilapidated residence described by officials as having conditions “worse than livestock.” Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson remarked that the children appeared malnourished and neglected to an extreme degree.
Four adults-Gary Siders Jr., Gary Siders Sr., Christina Siders, and Elizabeth Siders-are now facing child endangerment charges. All have pleaded not guilty.
Employees at a nearby Dollar General who had contact with the Siders family shared observations with WBNS 10. They noted the family frequently shopped late at night, purchasing items such as chips, diapers, water, vegetable oil, and sugar. Some staff mentioned the family sometimes struggled to pay and displayed signs of poor hygiene, though this was not unusual for the economically challenged area.
One anonymous employee expressed regret, wondering if there was anything they could have done to intervene, given the subtle warning signs they witnessed. Another coworker, Ariel Gutierrez, described seeing Gary Jr. closely controlling Elizabeth and noticed the children appeared extremely thin, pale, and often hid their faces.
Vinton County Sheriff Ryan Cain described the home as filthy, with a high presence of bacterial and human waste. He said the children were confined to a small 12-by-12-foot space for years and were in such poor condition they seemed on the verge of collapsing through the floor. Cain emphasized that even livestock are typically kept in better conditions.
Elizabeth Siders’ attorney, Tommy Stolly, contested these descriptions in an interview with WBNS 10TV. He denied the children were confined to a single room and highlighted that all of their children were born in hospitals. Stolly also noted that older children had cell phones, social media accounts, and shared inside jokes, suggesting they were not entirely isolated.
Authorities are investigating this case as one of prolonged and extreme neglect and abuse within the family. Notably, Elizabeth Siders has had multiple pregnancies over the years, including four sets of twins in the past three years. Tragically, conjoined twins born in 2022 died shortly after birth.
