BELLEVILLE, Ill. – An Illinois state trooper who shot and killed a Maryville woman earlier this year will not be charged, following investigations by the St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office and Illinois State Police’s Division of Internal Affairs.
State’s Attorney James Gomric met with the family of Rachel E. Tarrence and their attorney on July 16 to discuss the findings of their investigation, according to a statement from the state’s attorney’s office. That same day, the Illinois State Police received a letter from Gomric’s office informing them the trooper in question would not be charged.
Tarrence was shot to death on Jan. 4, 2026, outside of a liquor store in the 4500 block of State Street in East St. Louis. Tarrence was 40. No troopers were injured…
