What began as a simple request for a storyteller to visit a pre-kindergarten classroom has grown into a regional nonprofit serving children and families across North Georgia, western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee.
This year, the Craddock Center is celebrating its 25th anniversary, marking a quarter-century of efforts to improve early childhood literacy, school readiness and family support throughout Appalachia.
The center traces its roots to the work of the late Dr. Fred Craddock, an internationally known preacher and educator widely recognized for his storytelling abilities. According to Executive Director Kirk Cameron, the organization was inspired when a Gilmer County teacher asked Craddock to visit her classroom and tell stories to pre-kindergarten students.
“Through that experience, he began learning more about the children and the challenges they faced, especially access to books,” Cameron said. “That became the impetus for the entire organization.”…
