An “iconic” mural in Old Town Bluffton will be restored thanks to a grant from the town’s Historic Preservation Grant Program.
The $20,000 grant will fund the restoration of “The Rate,” a historic building representing Bluffton’s “architectural eccentricity and charm” that features the “Sealtest Ice Cream” mural, according to a press release from the Town of Bluffton. The Rate is located at 45 Bridge St., and is now home to Simpson Construction. This is the 15th grant awarded by the program since its launch in January 2022.
The Rate was built in 1946 by Galliard Heyward in the heart of Old Town as a sundries shop for tourists, and the mural was first painted in 1948 to advertise it. It’s a simple concrete-block structure painted white, and the mural can be seen on the Boundary Street side…
