[1] Family of murder victim in Santa Fe say potential sentence for killer is not enough – In October 2022, Kiara McCulley stabbed 21-year-old Grace Jennings with a long sword 27 times. Her boyfriend, Isaac Apodaca encouraged McCulley to commit the murder to rank up in a secret organization that didn’t exist. As part of a plea deal, McCulley agreed to testify against Apodaca in exchange for a shorter sentence. With McCulley facing a max sentence of 30 years compared to Apodaca’s life sentence, Jennings’ family and friends said justice was not served.
[2] NM lawmaker looks to improve how state tracks West Nile Virus after husband’s death – State Senator Nicole Tobiassen (R-Albuquerque), who recently lost her husband to West Nile Virus, is taking action. Mark Tobiassen, 65, was bitten by mosquitoes in his backyard. The virus turned him into a quadriplegic and put him on a ventilator, he died months later. As Mark joined others in the ICU battling West Nile, Nicole looked into ways to keep New Mexicans safe. She started this past legislative session, adding millions to the state budget to expand a program to track infected mosquitoes. She is proposing a bill to make sure these cases are reported to the state and to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
