The FAA told local outlets the pause was expected to last until about 5 p.m., and officials warned there was a medium chance the hold could be extended.
According to WMAR-2 News, the FAA said the reason for the ground stop is severe weather and that the hold is expected to remain in place until 5 p.m. The station also noted the agency’s message that there is roughly a 30 to 60 percent chance the pause could be extended.

The Air Traffic Control System Command Center operations advisory listed “IAD/DCA/BWI GROUND STOP/DELAY PROGRAM PROBABLE” for the afternoon, warning that convective weather across the Northeast could trigger broader restrictions. The advisory shows multiple terminal initiatives and arrival route constraints that can create cascading delays at airports throughout the region.

The National Weather Service aviation discussion for the Baltimore–Washington area warned of strong to severe thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon, with damaging wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain possible, hazards that routinely force the FAA to suspend departures for safety.
