BOSTON (WWLP) – A Department of Homeland Security employee has been charged with allegedly using falsified Department of Veterans Affairs documents to obtain a $478,000 VA-backed mortgage.
According to charging documents, 30-year-old Schleider Aristhyl of Warwick, Rhode Island, a military veteran, submitted two falsified documents with his October 2024 application for a VA-backed mortgage from a private lender.

Prosecutors allege the first document falsely stated that Aristhyl had received a 100% VA disability rating and was collecting more than $3,000 in monthly disability benefits. Aristhyl did not have a VA disability rating and was not receiving disability payments at the time he submitted the application.
The second document allegedly falsely claimed Aristhyl was exempt from paying the VA funding fee required for most VA-backed home loans. The exemption was fraudulent, and the funding fee exceeded $10,000…
