BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – FIRST ALERT WEATHER DAY: Today is a First Alert Weather Day because dangerous heat and humidity will drive heat index values above 105 degrees in spots during the hottest part of the afternoon. A Heat Advisory is in effect now through 9 p.m. for Lamar, Fayette, Walker, Jefferson, Shelby, Pickens, Tuscaloosa, Bibb, Chilton, Greene, Hale, Perry, Marengo, Dallas and Autauga Counties.
THE NEXT 24 HOURS: This morning temperatures are in the 70s under a mostly cloudy sky. This afternoon, actual air temperatures will range from 92 to 95 degrees. It’s the high humidity that will make it feel much hotter and can increase the risk of heat-related illness, especially if you’re outside for long stretches. Take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning, drink plenty of water, and shift outdoor work or workouts to early morning or near sunset when it’s less oppressive. The risk for rain today will be very isolated, and many communities will stay dry.
THE NEXT BIG THING: This evening, a stationary boundary parks itself over the state and will remain in place through early Saturday. This will cause scattered storms to develop, mainly during the afternoon and early evening. The main concern Thursday through Saturday will be the possibility of localized flooding. If you live in a flood-prone area, this is your First Alert. With increased rain coverage, temperatures will dip back into the upper 80s Friday and Saturday.
TROPICAL STORM BERTHA: Tropical Storm Bertha is in the northeast Gulf, about 110 miles west-southwest of Panama City, Florida, moving west around 5-6 mph with top winds near 60 mph, and it is expected to weaken gradually as it tracks westward near or along the northern Gulf Coast over the next couple of days. For the Alabama Gulf Coast, the main message is dangerous marine and beach impacts: swells from Bertha will build and spread west along the northern Gulf Coast, increasing the risk of life-threatening rip currents and rough surf, even if the center stays west of Alabama.
