New drop-off program makes sharps disposal easier across Winnebago County

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – A new program to help Winnebago County residents get rid of their used sharps sees success, leaders say. The program comes two years after experts said more disposal options were needed in the Rockford region.

Winnebago County Public Health Administrator Sandra Martell says before the Residential Sharps Disposal program, pharmacies and health care centers — including the health department — didn’t have a way to receive and accept sharps for proper disposal.

“As more and more individuals take injectable medications and self-administer in their homes, there became this large quantity of waste,” Martell explained…
