Officers warn that commercial vehicle speeding poses serious safety risks
California Highway Patrol officers recently stopped a large tractor-trailer traveling 80 miles per hour in a 65 MPH zone on northbound US-101 south of Fairview Avenue, the agency announced Monday, July 21.
The CHP Santa Barbara office used the traffic stop as an opportunity to remind motorists—particularly commercial vehicle operators—about the dangers of speeding on local highways.
Stopping Distance a Major Concern
“Commercial vehicles require significantly more time and distance to stop,” CHP officials stated in a social media post about the incident. “At highway speeds, even a small increase can greatly increase the risk of a serious crash.”
A fully loaded tractor-trailer traveling at highway speeds can weigh up to 80,000 pounds and requires a significantly longer distance to come to a complete stop compared to passenger vehicles. According to federal safety guidelines, a large truck traveling at 65 MPH under ideal conditions needs nearly two football fields—approximately 525 feet—to stop completely. Higher speeds dramatically increase that distance.
