TOOELE COUNTY, Utah (ABC4) — Butterfield Canyon is currently closed indefinitely due to a washed-out road, according to officials with the Tooele County Parks and Recreation.
According to the county, the road is impassable after heavy rains washed out the road. They are asking travelers to take an alternative route between Tooele County and Salt Lake County through the canyon. Travel through to Salt Lake County is no longer possible because of the closure on the Salt Lake County side.
Steven Kuhlmeier, Director Public Works Operations at Salt Lake County said that this is an unincorporated county road. The part that was wash-out was about 5.5. miles into the canyon. The road is closed for the foreseeable future.
“There is a lot of debris, dirt and sand that washed out. At about 5.5 miles, the road definitely narrows down to only a passable strip for about 8 feet. I would definitely encourage you to avoid the area because it definitely appears to be undercut,” Kuhlmeier said. “While there is asphalt hanging over the edge, there is not thing much underneath it.”…
