Some local teenagers in Mount Vernon are getting a firsthand look at what it takes to become a firefighter. Yesterday marked the start of a two-day youth fire camp hosted by the Black Township Fire Department. Twenty-seven campers are learning valuable skills, including fire safety, how to properly use a fire extinguisher, CPR, and basic first aid. Firefighters are also introducing participants to the department’s cadet program, encouraging those interested to explore a future career in the fire service. Fire Chief Jay Price says the camp gives young people a unique opportunity to see firsthand what firefighters do every day. The camp continues today at Fire Station One in Mount Vernon.
