ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) – Congressional cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program are being felt across the St. Louis region, where thousands of low-income families, elderly residents, immigrants with green cards, and those working toward citizenship rely on the benefits. As the changes take effect, local organizations are working to fill the gap.
Volunteers at Archway Refugee Connections in the Tower Grove area pack dozens of boxes of food, including canned tomatoes, rice, and onions, every two weeks. Volunteers personally deliver them to 60 families across the region.
“Our average family size has about 7 people in it,” said Jessica Pachak, executive director of Archway Refugee Connections. “Usually [each family is] mom and dad and five or six kids.”…
