LEMAY, Mo. (First Alert 4) – A proposal to fill an inactive quarry in south St. Louis County with millions of cubic yards of material has drawn opposition from nearby residents and prompted the St. Louis County Planning Commission to delay its decision.
The quarry is located near the intersection of Mount Olive Road and Avenue H in Lemay, near Interstate 55. The proposal calls for filling the site with roughly three million cubic yards of material over a span of 10 to 15 years, with work occurring up to six days a week.
Officials say only “clean fill materials” would be used, which includes uncontaminated soil, rock, sand, and gravel, but can also include tougher materials like concrete, asphaltic concrete, cinder blocks, brick, minimal amounts of wood and metal, and inert solids approved by rule or policy of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources…
