MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – Most people across the South have heard of the Freedom Rides that challenged segregation on buses and trains. However, organizers in Montgomery are shining a light on a lesser-known chapter of the movement: Freedom Riders who took to the skies.
Montgomery Regional Airport, in partnership with Friends of the Freedom Riders and Montgomery City Councilwoman Franetta Riley, held an event to honor “the few who flew.” The civil rights activists who traveled by plane as part of desegregation efforts.
