CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) -We have been tracking this and giving you the First Alert for strong storms approaching the Carolinas. Here’s what you need to know for your week ahead.
Sunday showers continue
Scattered showers and storms will linger through Sunday morning, July 26, as a weak system moves across the area. Rain chances are highest through late morning, then drop to isolated storms by afternoon 20% chance. Temperatures are expected to reach the mid-80s with light east winds.
Sunday night is expected to bring a few more showers after sunset before conditions gradually dry out.
Monday: A calmer day
Drier air moves in Monday, and the severe threat stays low. While a few scattered storms can’t be completely ruled out, most of the day is expected to be dry with only 20% rain chances. Afternoon temperatures will reach the low 80s under mostly cloudy skies. Light east winds continue. It’s a good opportunity to get outdoor plans done before the next system arrives.
Tuesday: Cold front, severe weather risk
This is the day to watch. A strong cold front approaches the Carolinas, and we’re tracking the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms, especially Tuesday evening and into the night.
Temperatures are forecast to be the warmest of the week, climbing into the low to mid-90s across the Piedmont. Heat index values could exceed 100°, possibly reaching 105° in urban areas along the I-85 corridor. South winds increase to 10-15 mph ahead of the front.
The severe threat increases Monday night into Tuesday, with the greatest risk for strong to severe storms after peak heating into Tuesday evening and overnight. Damaging wind and heavy rainfall will be the primary threats. Some storms could linger into early Wednesday morning.
Wednesday to Saturday: Refreshing relief
