Hawthorne Race Course in southwest suburban Stickney to close after 135 years, according to multiple reports

STICKNEY, Ill. — The last operating horse racing track in the Chicagoland area is apparently closing after 135 years following its sale in bankruptcy court, though the track’s owner says racing could still continue there in the near future, according to multiple reports.

Hawthorne Race Course in southwest suburban Stickney will be sold to a developer after a bankruptcy judge agreed to a formal order clearing the way for a sale, according to BloodHorse, which covers thoroughbred horse racing, breeding and sales.

BloodHorse reports that on Friday morning, the judge ordered attorneys for Hawthorne, the prospective buyer and various creditors to complete a draft of a sale order. An attorney for the Delaware-based buyer, Allimac 2023 LLC, said one of the conditions of the deal is that the property must be cleared by Aug. 31, according to the report.

The report says efforts to find a purchaser who would continue regular racing at Hawthorne and move forward with a long-stalled casino plan failed. The bid of $90 million by Allimac was the only bid on the track, according to the report…
