Traditional marinera dancers spun across the room, their white handkerchiefs fluttering above their heads. Children in brightly colored dresses and handmade headbands danced to the Peruvian cajón, a box-shaped percussion instrument. All while families enjoyed traditional dishes of lomo saltado, ensalada rusa and alfajores.
For four hours Saturday afternoon, the Hilton Garden Inn in Beaverton became a celebration of Peru’s culture and Independence Day, welcoming both Peruvians and non-Peruvians to experience the country’s music, cuisine and traditions.
William Bilchez, who moved to the United States from Peru at age 16 and now lives in Portland, brought his entire family after discovering the festival online. Although he returns to Peru only every few years, he said the festival instantly brought him back.
“Growing up in Peru, my heart is there,” Bilchez said. “Listening to the music, it just brings back memories.”…
