LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – Nebraskans are facing a third consecutive day of dangerous heat, with heat index values soaring to 105 to 115 degrees across much of the state Monday.
It’ll be a third straight day that we have a Weather Alert Day in the forecast.
An Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect for Lincoln, Omaha, much of eastern Nebraska and south-central Nebraska (including the Tri-Cities) until 10 p.m. Monday night.
Northern, central and western Nebraska are under a Heat Advisory through the evening.
What to Expect Monday
The dangerous heat will peak this afternoon, with heat index values already approaching 100 degrees by late morning. Air temperatures will climb into upper 90s and lower 100s statewide.
Conditions will remain mostly sunny through the day with very warm morning temperatures already in the lower 80s. South winds will remain light and become more northeasterly later in the day, but the combination of heat and humidity — with dewpoints in the lower 70s to low 80s — will make it feel dangerously hot the moment you step outside.
Lincoln residents should prepare for heat index values near 110 to 115 degrees, with actual air temperatures reaching around 101 degrees.
Monday Evening: Storms Possible Out West
A weather system moving in from the west will bring scattered showers and thunderstorms Monday evening into early Tuesday morning. There is a Marginal to Slight (Level 2 of 5) risk for scattered severe storm potential in western Nebraska with a primary threat of damaging wind gusts (up to 75 mph+).
While most areas will see only isolated storms, there is a low-end potential for isolated strong wind gusts of 45 to 60 mph if storms are able to maintain strength moving through eastern Nebraska. The chance of rain remains relatively low at 15 to 30 percent.
Relief Arrives Tuesday
Temperatures will begin to drop Tuesday, with highs settling into the low 90s — still above normal, but significantly cooler than Monday.
Cloud cover will increase, and dewpoints will fall into the upper 60s and low 70s, making the air feel much more comfortable.
A few lingering showers may continue Tuesday morning before gradually diminishing.
Looking Ahead: Rain Chances Return
The remainder of the work week will see highs ranging from the upper 80s to low 90s. Additional rain chances will develop Thursday into Friday as a stronger weather system moves across the northern Plains.
