The String Cheese Incident Cover John Coltrane, Grateful Dead and Johnny Cash with Guests in Oregon

The String Cheese Incident traveled to Oregon for two shows over the weekend. On Friday the group performed at the Cuthbert Amphitheater in Eugene. Then on Saturday, SCI moved on to Britt in Jacksonville. Both gigs featured appearances from longtime friends of the band. — Midway through the second set of the Cuthbert Amphitheater show, Scott Law took the stage with the group. Law appeared on electric guitar for an animated run through Johnny Cash’s “Big River” during which he squared up with both Bill Nershi and Michael Kang for some animated back and forth during an extended jam. Later in the evening the returned to the stage for a rollicking version of “Deal,” the Jerry Garcia-Robert Hunter tune that opens the 1972Garcia album and was a longtime Dead staple.

Then the next night at Britt, Jeff Pevar appeared for a pair of songs. As with the previous evening, the guest guitarist emerged during the second set. Pevar first appeared on “Impressions,” the John Coltrane tune that has been in rotation with SCI ever since 1997. Then he returned to the stage for the group’s own “Let’s Go Outside,” which served as the evening’s encore. — The String Cheese Incident tour continues in Harrisburg, PA on August 5…
