EVANSVILLE (WEVV) — Evansville Water and Sewer Utility (EWSU) will temporarily switch the disinfectant used in its water treatment process beginning Monday, Aug. 3, 2026, through Monday, Sept. 14, 2026, as part of routine maintenance done twice a year.
EWSU says the temporary change helps keep water mains clean and reduces the chance of harmful bacteria building up in the system year-round.
EWSU normally uses chloramine—a disinfectant made from chlorine and ammonia—which the utility has used since 1999. During the maintenance period, EWSU will switch to free chlorine, which the utility says is a more potent disinfectant and can help address more resistant bacteria or viruses in the distribution system…
