Emergent need for type O blood at American Red Cross

HOOVER, Ala. (WIAT) — The American Red Cross has declared a nationwide blood crisis. It is the second time in the organization’s history that blood donations have been this low — the first time being in 2022.

“This is now where hospitals are already having to make those tough decisions, and they’re grabbing for that blood, and it’s not there,” said Annette Rowland, a spokesperson for the American Red Cross.

The American Red Cross said it’s in emergent need of type O blood, though all donors are encouraged to come. The organization said summer months usually see a dip in blood supply, but there’s not a pinpoint reason as to why it’s at a crisis level this summer…
