Sharp drop in shootings in city of Syracuse, but shots fired calls spike in frequency

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Gun crime is down in Syracuse, according to new police data.

The latest information tracked by the Syracuse Police Department shows shootings and homicides with a firearm between January and July 2026 are down roughly a third compared to the same timeframe during 2025.

So far this year, there have been 29 victims of shootings compared to 42 during the same time last year. Six of those victims died from their injuries. Police data shows the 10 year average is 67 people hurt or killed by this time in the year.
