Aide who had an affair with Gavin Newsom shares her account of what happened

In a new first-person piece in Vanity Fair, Ruby Rippey describes her affair two decades ago with then-San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and takes issue with the way the governor characterized it in his memoir.

In his memoir, released earlier this year, Newsom devotes a single paragraph to the affair with Rippey, who was his appointments secretary. He describes them flirting with each other in the office, which drew admonishment from his sister Hilary, who reminded him that Rippey was married to his friend and deputy chief of staff, Alex Tourk.

“A few months later, Ruby was among a group of staffers who came to my apartment for a party. She was the last to leave. It was the stupidest and also briefest of affairs,” Newsom writes. “A year later, to her credit, Ruby decided to come clean to her twelve-step group. I came clean to Hilary and to Alex Tourk.”…
