🩸 The American Red Cross has declared its second-ever national blood supply crisis after a four-year summer low in donations. The only other time the organization declared such a crisis was in January 2022.
The Red Cross has put prevention measures in place, including enhanced planning with hospitals to match their ongoing needs. Despite that and thousands of people still giving blood, the rate of donations isn’t keeping pace with hospital demands. Much of the lower donor turnout this summer has been attributed to extreme heat, poor air quality and widespread foodborne illnesses.
