TxDOT closing all lanes on busy San Antonio highway. Here’s when.

For many San Antonio drivers, it feels like there is always traffic on Interstate 35 (I-35). It’s just a matter of where, along the 509-mile-long highway, the delays are longest. This week, the route you may want to avoid is located east of downtown, near Fort Sam Houston.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is planning a major closure on I-35 south, according to a press release. It begins on Thursday, July 30, at 9 p.m., and continues through Friday, July 31, at 5 a.m. Here’s what will be blocked:

  • All the main lanes between the exit ramp at North Walters Street and the exit ramp at North New Braunfels Avenue.
  • The I-35 south entrance ramp before North Walters Street and the I-35 south.
  • The exit ramp at North New Braunfels Avenue.

Folks traveling near Government Hill will be most severely impacted, as other drivers take detours through the area. TxDOT says the shutdown must occur so crews can work on tasks for the state’s I-35 Northeast Expansion project (NEX).

The initiative focuses on widening approximately 20 miles of the interstate from N. Walters Street to FM 1103 across Bexar, Comal, and Guadalupe counties. Upon project completion, the department says, the interstate will be safer, and commuters will experience lower travel times…
