CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A Charlotte real estate attorney is accused of embezzling more than $2 million from one of his clients, a lawsuit filed last month claims.
The suit filed by Pineville man Edwin Bonds alleges that Ryan Hatley of law firm Sperry & Hatley used closing funds belonging to Bond for personal expenses, including vacations, vehicles, meals and entertainment.
The suit stemmed from the $1 million purchase of a waterfront home in Brunswick County. Sperry & Hatley served as the closing attorneys, settlement agents, escrow agents, and fiduciaries responsible for receiving, safeguarding, accounting for and disbursing the funds associated with the transaction.
