New proposed federal legislation unveiled by California congressional representatives in Los Angeles on Wednesday would make it easier to report the medical neglect or abuse experienced by thousands of immigrants detained at the 245 ICE detention facilities around the country.
At a press conference next to downtown LA’s “Defend Dignity” mural by artist Shepard Fairey, elected officials said the bill’s mandate for a standardized reporting system will help more than 65,760 immigrants in ICE detention get proper medical care.
“Angelenos and our constituents need to know that their taxpayer dollars are being used to fund medical abuse and mistreatment in these facilities,” Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove, representing California’s 37th district, said at the press conference. “This piece of legislation would say that [detained immigrants] need a medical assessment by an independent source. Because these facilities are not providing basic, humane care.”…
