Mayor urges property owners to ‘step up’ after Columbus State drops free college levy

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther is calling on property owners to “step up” to provide students with free college education after Columbus State Community College decided not to ask voters for a new levy this fall.

On Wednesday, Columbus State announced it would not place a levy on the November ballot that would have paid for free or reduced tuition for in-county students. The levy was estimated to cost the owner of a nearly $300,000 home about $200 a year.

Ginther said polling showed overwhelming support for the levy and expressed frustration over the decision.

“I’m angry,” Ginther said. “I’m sad for the kids in this community. The kids of this community deserve this. And we need adults to step up and fight for our kids.”…
