Late-night talk show taunts Buc-ee’s trademark protection efforts

Texas-based Buc-ee’s, which is now building a massive travel center in Mebane, is being taunted by a late-night comedy talk show over the company’s aggressive desire to protect its brand identity, and most importantly, its mascot.

On a recent episode of HBO’s “Last Week Tonight,” host John Oliver detailed Buc-ee’s impressive record of winning trademark lawsuits against smaller regional competitors, even companies whose mascots have been around prior to Buc-ee’s.

Buc-ee’s, which in 2027 expects to open its first North Carolina location in Mebane, has developed a reputation for proactively defending it trademark, filing at least a dozen lawsuits against companies with animal logos…
